Genetic Models

Common frame work for creation and classification

Biological Genetics is about the data structure of life.  In this is the construction history of life  and also the story of its evolution.  It shows us how we are  connected to spinach and spiders . By tweaking these genes we can create new types of spinach. Even before gene tweaking selective breeding allowed us to develop desirable designs.

We should be designing with genes

The design processes of nature were first unraveled by Charles Darwin 150 years ago. The  understanding of genetics gave it greater clarity.  The ever increasing power of computers makes it now possible to implement genetic design processes in a way that was not possible before. Unfortunately most designers are obsessed with creating designs that are different to each. The obsession with differentiation makes the idea of commonality between designs understandably unappealing.

Why understanding of commonality will help creative design

The human design process is constrained by the limitations of the human brain. Creative design in the future will not be about pushing the limited capacity of your brain but it will be about using your brain to push the increasingly unlimited capacity of computers to explore design possibilities. To do this, all that is mundane needs to be automated.  Its only by automating the mundane that the designers will have the time  to explore creative possibilities.

Genetic structuring will allow us to procedurize (without loss of creative expression) all that can be procedurized. Procedurization will allow computers to complete complex tasks without human labor allowing designers to assess many matured design possibilities based on genetically conceived concepts.
